Joining the New York Association of Collaborative Professionals

The New York Association of Collaborative Professionals opens its membership to like-minded lawyers who are interested in providing New York area families with another dispute resolution process on an annual basis. Our membership year runs from January 1st – December 31st.

New members agree to meet the following requirements and to complete the initial training requirements within twelve (12) months of joining the Group.

Lawyer
Financial Specialist
Mental Health Professional/Coach
Mental Health Professional/Child Specialist

2008 NYACP Membership Requirements (Lawyers)

  1. Annual Dues: $1000;
  2. Member in Good Standing New York State Bar with Professional Liability Insurance;
  3. Five years of Matrimonial Experience;
  4. Participation in a 2-day Collaborative Law Training;
  5. Participation in a 36-40 hour Mediation Training;
  6. Agreement to sign and abide by NYACP Participation Agreement;
  7. Attendance at 7 meetings during 12 month membership period;
  8. Continuing Training Requirement (after 1st year of membership):
    4 Hours:  Matrimonial Law related topic
  9. Continuing Collaborative Process Training Requirement (after 1st year of membership):
    4 Hours:       If you have completed 2 or more Collaborative cases during the previous year, January 1, 2007 - December 31, 2007;
    8 Hours:       If you have completed fewer than 2 Collaborative cases during the previous year, January 1, 2007 - December 31, 2007;

  1. Membership in International Association of Collaborative Professionals (IACP) & listing on IACP Website;
  2. Listing on NYACP website upon completion of Training Requirements, and access to the Member Only section with Collaborative Practice resources on training and practice materials;
  3. Professionally developed Collaborative Marketing Materials;
  4. Benefits of NYACP Professionally developed Public Relations Campaign;
  5. Collaborative Mentor will be assigned for 1st year members;
  6. Advanced Collaborative Law & Collaborative Practice Training opportunities;
  7. More than 50 Group meetings/year: meetings provide the opportunity for peer support, networking & referrals. Some meetings provide NYS MCLE credits.
  8. Regular e-mail notice of upcoming events;

2008 NYACP Membership Requirements (Financial Specialist)

  1. Annual Dues: $1000;
  2. NYS Licensed professional (CFP, CPA) in good standing. Other NYS Licensed Financial Professionals may submit their credentials and apply for membership on a case by case basis;
  3. Demonstration via curriculum vitae of background, education and experience in:
    1. Financial aspects of divorce;
    2. Cash management and spending plans;
    3. Retirement and pension plans;
    4. Income tax;
    5. Investments;
    6. Insurance;
    7. Property division;
    8. Individual and family financial planning concepts.
  4. Participation in a 3-day Interdisciplinary Collaborative Training;
  5. Participation in a 36-40 hour Mediation Training;
  6. In addition to the above, sixteen (16) additional hours of education in the financial fundamentals of NYS Family Law including:
    1. Divorce procedures;
    2. Property – valuation and division;
    3. Pensions and retirement plans;
    4. Budgeting – income and expenses;
    5. Child and spousal support;
    6. Future income projections;
    7. Financial implications of different settlement scenarios.
  7. Agreement to sign and abide by NYACP Participation Agreement;
  8. Agreement to complete IACP Collaborative Practice Survey upon the completion of a Collaborative case (one professional per case);
  9. Attendance at 7 meetings during 12 month membership period;
  10. Continuing Training Requirement (after 1st year of membership):
    4 hours of continuing professional education in programs offered by The Institute for Divorce Financial Analysts (IDFA)
  11. Continuing Collaborative Process Training Requirement (after 1st year of membership):
    4 Hours:       If you have completed 2 or more Collaborative cases during the previous year, January 1, 2007 - December 31, 2007;
    8 Hours:       If you have completed fewer than 2 Collaborative cases during the previous year, January 1, 2007 - December 31, 2007;

  1. Annual Dues: $1000;
  2. NYS licensed Mental Health Professional with Professional Liability Insurance in good standing in one of the following:
    1. MD – Medical Doctor, Psychiatrist
    2. PhD – Doctor of Philosophy
    3. Psy D – Doctorate of Psychology
    4. LCSW – Licensed Clinical Social Worker
    5. RSW – Registered Social Worker
    6. MFT – Marriage and Family Therapist
  3. Demonstration via curriculum vitae of background, education and experience in:
    1. Knowledge of families in transition and family systems theories;
    2. Knowledge of and expertise in the stages of family development including the unique challenges of diversified families and children with special needs;
    3. Experience with divorce-related issues and conflict resolution including but not limited to: psychotherapy, mediation, forensic evaluation and parenting coordinator.
    4. An understanding of crisis and its impact on the family’s development with special focus on transitioning the family post-divorce.
  4. Participation in a 3-day Interdisciplinary Collaborative Training;
  5. Participation in a 36-40 hour Mediation Training;
  6. Minimum of 3 hours of Family Law training; can be component of another training;
  7. Agreement to sign and abide by NYACP Participation Agreement;
  8. Agreement to complete IACP Collaborative Practice Survey upon the completion of a Collaborative case (one professional per case);
  9. Attendance at 7 meetings during 12 month membership period;
  10. Continuing Training Requirement (after 1st year of membership): Minimum of 6 hours per year of continuing education directly related to divorce coaching and collaborative practice.
  11. Continuing Collaborative Process Training Requirement (after 1st year of membership):
    4 Hours:       If you have completed 2 or more Collaborative cases during the previous year, January 1, 2007 - December 31, 2007;
    8 Hours:       If you have completed fewer than 2 Collaborative cases during the previous year, January 1, 2007 - December 31, 2007;

  1. Annual Dues: $1000;
  2. NYS licensed Mental Health Professional with Professional Liability Insurance in good standing in one of the following:
  1. MD – Medical Doctor, Psychiatrist
  2. PhD – Doctor of Philosophy
  3. Psy D – Doctorate of Psychology
  4. LCSW – Licensed Clinical Social Worker
  5. RSW – Registered Social Worker
  6. MFT – Marriage and Family Therapist
  1. Demonstration via curriculum vitae of background, education and experience in:
    1. Expertise in children’s emotional and cognitive development;
    2. Ability to connect with children of various ages, including adolescents with the knowledge of how to interpret their verbal and non-verbal communication;
    3. Since the child specialist is often asked to assess quickly a child’s needs as well as assess the family dynamics, it is essential that the child specialist have extensive experience which may include but not be limited to: play therapist, child therapist, child evaluator including the ability to do psychological testing and forensic evaluations.
  1. Participation in a 3-day Interdisciplinary Collaborative Training;
  2. Participation in a 36-40 hour Mediation Training;
  3. Minimum of 3 hours of Family Law training; can be component of another training;
  4. Agreement to sign and abide by NYACP Participation Agreement;
  5. Agreement to complete IACP Collaborative Practice Survey upon the completion of a Collaborative case (one professional per case);
  6. Attendance at 7 meetings during 12 month membership period;
  7. Continuing Training Requirement (after 1st year of membership):
    Minimum of 6 hours per year of continuing education directly related to Child Specialist role and Collaborative Practice.
  8. Continuing Collaborative Process Training Requirement (after 1st year of membership):
